Quick-Write

What role do students play in the quality of their education? Take five or ten minutes to write your reactions to the reading from Fried's The Passionate Teacher about the Game of School (GOS). Use the following questions as a non-binding guide to your writing. Don't worry about being too polished. Instead, write as much as you can for five or ten minutes.

  • What are the key indicators that the Game of School is being played?
  • How did the GOS influence your own view of school and learning in high school?
  • How are these views affecting your approach to being a student at URI?
  • What role do you think the GOS play in efforts to improve schools

There is no question whether or not the Game of School exists, it certainly does. Students are consistently attempting to find new ways to do the lest amount of work while still getting satisfactory grades. Whether its a short cut or cheating, students still lie their way out of work. When these students see other students doing less work and getting the same grades this pressures the students to not do as much work as their doing. Yet they are passing tests. These students are not even oping up their texts books yet they are still managing to get A's and B's on their work. This is keeping them from actually retaining any of the information, rather then spending their time on studying they spend their time on short cuts. My experience has been the same though out high school. Even though teachers at my school strived to do their best to be enthusiastic about teaching and try to encourage their students to do their work but that will only help the students so much if they don't try their hardest. Parents need to work more teaching their children to focus and care about their studies if they want their children to be able to meet their capability. Growing up in a house hold that has teachers in-rooted into my family tree my parents always pressured me to do as much of the work as possible. Never ever do just the bare minimum. My mother sees her students just do as much as their told and this eats away at her, she refused to let me to just enough to get a B. Whether it is a project or a test my mother never let me procrastinate and do all the work in one night. This has done fathoms for me, I would't have retained the knowledge I would have if my mother didn't shove "do ALL the work" down my throat. I realized that students do the absolute same thing the first week in college. I expected that if it was college students would try their hardest, yet not to my surprise they don't. Students are only concerned with getting the minimum passing grade so they can move on to the next class, they aren't worried about learning. If our grading system doesn't get revamped then our schools will stay the same.
